  • Synthetic and toxic
  • Skin irritation: DEET can cause skin irritation in some people, especially if applied in large amounts or on sensitive skin. Symptoms may include redness, itching, or rashes.
  • Allergic reactions: Individuals may experience severe allergic reactions to DEET, such as swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing
  • Neurological toxicity: Although uncommon, there have been reports of neurotoxic effects associated with DEET use, particularly with prolonged or high-concentration applications. These effects may include headaches, tremors, seizures, and even unconsciousness in extreme cases, primarily when used improperly.
  • Damage to materials: DEET can damage certain plastics, fabrics, and painted surfaces due to its strong solvent properties. This includes sunglasses, watches, and clothing, which can be problematic if it comes into contact with these materials
  • Risk for children: Caution is advised when using DEET products on young children. Although generally safe at low concentrations, some studies suggest limiting its use on children to avoid adverse effects.
  • Environmental impact: There is concern about DEET’s environmental impact, as it can enter water bodies and potentially affect wildlife, although research on this topic is still limited.
